    History of these coins:
During the later period of the Roman empire Christianity began to replace paganism.  This change was reflected in their coinage.  Gone were the images of emperors replaced instead with images of Jesus Christ and religious inscriptions called "Christo grams".  The reverse side of the coin offered here carries a typical Christo gram:
    IHSUS XRISTUS BASILEU BASILE
"Jesus Christ, King of Kings".  These coins represent significant change in the world's religious direction and have become highly collectible.
The coin offered is classed as an "A1" and has the following characteristics:
Attributed to the reign of John I (969-976).
Small, thin flans averaging 7 grams and lacking the ornamentation above and below the reverse inscription characterized by succeeding issues; usually overstruck on coins of Nicephorus II (Phocas) 963-969 and Constantine VII (Porphyrogenitus) 913-959.
The dating of these coins is assured from literary information.  They were probably minted starting from the reign of John I (Zimiskes) and at the beginning of the combined reign of Basil II and Constantine VIII (976-1025).  The period of time of this class is probably 969 to 989, when Bardas Phokas the usurper was killed by Basil II.
    Photo Example:
Obv. Bust of Christ facing, wearing nimbus cruciger (halo) cross (usually two pellets in each limb of cross), pallium (a cloak) and colobium (a sleeveless outer tunic) and holding book of Gospels with both hands.  Cover of Gospels ornamented with central pellet in border of dots.  Letters IC to left and  XC to right of bust.
    +ЄMAN NOVHΛ
    (
    God is with us
    ) left to right.
    Rv. Legend on 4 lines:
    +IhSUS / XRISTUS / bASILЄU / bASILЄ
. Floral ornaments above and below, commonly characteristic on later issues, are lacking.
