Offered: BYZANTINE - MICHAEL VII DUKAS - NGC Ch VF 5/5 2/5 -
Obv. IC - XC.Bust of Christ from the front, his head capped with a cruciferous nimbus, dressed in pallium and columbium, blessing with the right hand and holding the Gospels with the left hand; double grènetis.
Rev. + MIX-AHA - RACIA O. Bust of Michael VII, bearded face, crowned with pendilia, dressed in loros, holding the pelletized labarum in his right hand and in his left a crucigerous globe; double grènetis.
Coin on a wide and well centered blank. Very nice reverse, well detailed. Collectible patina - BMC/B.1 - R.- - Do.1 - BN/B.11 - BC.1869 - RGCMW.- - DMBR.55 /1

COMMENTARY
Pale gold (electrum). Flan scyphate (concave). On the right, the cruciferous halo is decorated in each arm with a globule. On the Gospels, three points placed in a triangle. On the reverse, seven pearls in the crowned tiara, seven pearls around the neck. Loros richly decorated and gemmed. Pelletized labarum decorated with five globules placed in a centered square.
HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
MICHEL VII DOUKAS - (24/10/1071-24/03/1078)
Michel succeeded Romanus IV when the latter released by the Turks and returning to Constantinople, was blinded and died of his wound. Part of Asia Minor was lost, Sicily was invaded by the Normans and sedition broke out in the Balkans. Michel was overthrown by a conspiracy in 1078. Filed, he retired to a monastery.
