A solid gold Byzantine tremissis minted under Emperor Maurice Tiberius. Struck circa 582 - 602 AD at the Constantinople mint.
The obverse features a draped, cuirassed, right facing bust of the Emperor, adorned with a pearl diadem, surrounded by the legend "DN TIBERI PP AVG" (Our Lord Emperor Tiberius, Father of the Country).
The image of a Cross Potent appears on the reverse, bordered by the inscription "VICTORI MAVRI AVG" and "CONOB," the Mint mark of the Constantinople Mint.

Emperor Maurice Tiberius ruled the Byzantine Empire from A.D. 582-602, and is a Saint of the Orthodox Christian Church. Described by historians as an able emperor and commander-in-chief, he acted with insight, public spirit and courage. He is author of "Strategikon," perhaps the greatest treatise of military tactics and warfare up until WWII, and is praised for his inspired negotiations for peace with Persian Emperor Khosrau II. This gold tremissis, with a weight of 1.28 g, and a value of one-third solidus, was struck during the reign of Maurice Tiberius, A.D. 582-602.
