Byzantine, follis, Justinian I, year 12, 538/9, Nikomedia mint. 44mm, rare this size, 42mm standard. Excellent dark brown patina. Officina A, NIK in exergue. DN IVSTINIANVS PP AVG, helmeted, cuirassed bust facing, holding cross on globe and shield with horseman motif, cross to right / Large M, ANNO to left, cross above, regnal year to right, officina letter below, mintmark NIK. Sear Byzantine 201.
This planchet was made by hammering an old coin flat. Traces of the old coin can be seen.
