Obverse description: Diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Anastasius on the right, seen from three quarters in front (A’a); beaded tiara; the bust stamped with an eight-pointed star.
Obverse translation: “Dominus Noster Anastasius Perpetuus Augustus”, (Our lord Anastasius perpetual august).
Reverse legend: E // CON.
Reverse description: M between two pointed stars with eight spokes, surmounted by a croisette.
Comments about this specimen: Heavy series. Stylized portrait where the tiara is not visible. On the reverse, variant with two stars with eight spokes instead of six normally.
Comments: Byzantine coinage begins with the monetary reform of 498 and the creation of the follis or 40 nummi coin. The solidus of 4.50 g of pure gold is worth 180 fools. After 512, the crazy ones are on heavy and wide blanks.
History: After the assassination of Zeno, Anastase married Ariadne who chose him as emperor. His very long reign, 27 years, made it possible to restore imperial power. He died without an heir but is today considered the founder of the Byzantine Empire.
