    Pair of
    American Schools
    30¢ Stamps from 1979.
Mint. MNH. No flaws. Original undisturbed gum. From a Smoke-Free and Pet-Free Environment.
On August 27, 1979 in Devil's Lake, ND, the U.S. Postal Service issued this
    American Schools
    30¢ gummed stamp,
celebrating public education. The design features the Morris Township School No. 2 and the words "American Schools - Laying Future Foundations." The private firm of Kramer, Miller, Lomden and Glassman of Philadelphia, PA was hired by the U.S. Postal Service to design the Americana Issue Series
    (1975-1981)
of 25 different definitive postage stamps, featuring the culture and history of the United States.
Because the first class postage rate was 15¢ in 1979, this higher denomination stamp saw little use and is now more difficult for collectors to find.
Mary Antin described education as “the essence of American opportunity, the treasure that no thief could touch, not even misfortune or poverty” (
    The Promised Land
    , 1912).
Since 1635, when the first town-supported school was established, America’s public education system has come a long way. The Morris Township School No. 2 near Devil's Lake, North Dakota was used from 1894 to 1960, and then served as the Morris Town Hall.
