Description
Offered for sale in this fixed price listing is a 1898, PCGS MS64 Liberty, brilliant uncirculated double eagle .9675 ounce gold coin. The serial number 25333008is the coin I ship. This coin can be verified by using the serial number and MS64 grade at the PCGS site to "Verify Certification". 170,393 of these 1898 double eagle gold coins were minted in Philadelphia. High quality survivors like the coin I am offering are extremely rare. PCGS reports that on 4/24/2013 an MS64 Liberty sold for ,100.00 with Heritage Auctions. This is an undervalued coin by condition and rarity. This is the type of coin that investors with money to park in something safe and diverse should strongly consider. Rare gold coins offer: low downside risk, wealth preservation and total control of the investment with no third party hypothecation or rehypothecation possible to steal your stuff. This coin has high resolution photos available online also at PCGS. I am not allowed to provide any outside links so you will have to work with the clues I provided to that investigatory work for yourself. If you are a study examples of this same 1898 minted coin you would likely observe the overall quality to be above the standards used for grading MS64 by both NGC and PCGS. Typically this coin has problems stemming from dirty surfaces with many harsh bag handling marks on both sides. There are also a number of crossover grading attempts which overstate the population reports for both NGC and PCGS. This coin is more of a condition rarity due to mintage numbers and survivors than the 1905-S MS65 I have listed on ebay.
Subject 1898-P MS64 coin description and seller disclosure of prevailing imperfections are listed below. The PCGS slab has many surface scratches on both sides and a reholder should be considered if PCGS comes to a coin show with onsite grading near you.
Both sides present a brilliant uncirculated appearance with evidence of circulation wear. The obverse presents some dirty gold effects with a small area of surface discoloration/oxidization near 3:00. The PCGS spec photo samples show this as a reddish area but it is much less pronounced when you hold the slab and view it from different angles. The fine hairlines are intact with bag handling marks present mostly to the left side. A small dent line appears above the date and just below the neck. Eye appeal rates 8 on a 10 scale.
The reverse presents as 2 tone gold brilliant uncirculated eye appeal rating of 9. When you see this coin at the PCGS site a greenish shade or tinting appears on the top area of the reverse surface. This is very attractive to view in high resolution quality. Looking through and around the various slab scratches I see a coin with less bag handling marks than the obverse with an MS65 quality. It would not have been a stretch to assign a plus 64+grade to this true mint state coin.
The above notification by me serves to notify and disclose things about this coin which I observe and therefor feel are appropriate to mention even if they may not present to you in my auction photos. As this is a rare and extremely unique coin I am doing my best due diligence to disclose any conditions which may bear upon your decision to invest in a coin of this high level of collector quality.
In the NGC census report we see only (22) MS64 1898-P coins. That is top of the pop report.
In the PCGS population report there are only (24) MS64 and (2) MS64+ as top of the pop report.
The 1898-P MS64 Liberty does not often appear in auctions so the estimated price guide values of both NGC and PCGS do damage to the fair market value of this coin. I do not like to buy coins in auctions for my business due to buyer premiums which effect price discovery and inhibit realized prices.
PCGS and NGC professional grading services take all coin surface and strike or die issues into consideration. Item photos and item advisories are provided to help assure and convince the buyer that this coin was graded properly. Graded coins are the only safe alternative to buying coins online. I do not guarantee your satisfaction with any coin I offer for sale on ebay. No refunds and no returns is my ebay policy. Choose carefully and choose wisely with eyes wide open.
ebay has enabled buyer to seller contact for my store listings. If you need to contact me please use 8:00 AM PST to 10:00 PM PST as your guide for call times.
